Local Mosques and Prayer Areas

The following is a list of places you can pray:

The Green Roomgreen-room-mens

The Green Room is where it all happens. Not only does it provide a prayer room and wudhu facilities there is also a common room complete with a kitchen. There are two floors providing the same facilities, one for brothers and one for sisters. We are very lucky as this is one of the best prayer facilities in the country!!

Over £500,000 was spent on refurbishing it so make the most of it! It is located behind The Edge sports centre, next to the Conference Auditorium and is open 8am-8pm Monday-Friday. Don’t forget to use the recycling bins whilst you’re in there, being GREEN is very important these days.

Jumuah prayer takes place twice in the green room each Friday, however this prayer is designed to cater mainly for staff or students on a tight schedule. The khutbah (sermon) is very short and usually provided in Arabic. We encourage students to try and attend prayer in the Riley Smith Hall (see below). The two prayers (in the Green Room) are held at 12.30pm and 1.15pm in Winter and 1.15pm and 1.45pm in summer.

It’s important to note that the Green Room is owned by the University and not the Islamic Society. The ISoc has been entrusted to manage and care for the facilities – if this trust is abused, our privileged access to the room can easily be revoked.

For more information on the Green Room and it’s history please visit: The Green Room

Edward Boyle Libraryedward-boyle-library-shelves-on-floors-330x216

There is now a prayer room in Edward Boyle Library. Saves the journey to the Green Room during those hard-core work sessions. It is located on Level 11. It can accommodate about 4/5 people at any one time and so is not somewhere to chill out but a useful facility for a quick prayer. Wudhu can be made in any of the toilet or disabled toilet facilities in the library.

Laidlaw Library

Laidlaw Library has a small prayer area on Level 1 .

Cemetery Lodge

On Woodhouse Lane, just at the entrance of St George’s Field, behind the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Buildings. It will hold approximately 40-50 brothers and 20-30 sisters. It’s opening times will be the same as the Green Room from 8am-8pm Monday-Friday.

Riley Smith Hall

Jummah Prayer takes place every Friday during term-time in Riley Smith Hall in the Student Union building at 1.10pm. This is the main Jummah prayer with an English khutbah and can accommodate up to around 400 brothers and 50 sisters on the balcony. So no excuse!!

Leeds General Infirmary (LGI)

The prayer room is located in room B134 on B floor Clarendon Wing. This is particularly useful for medical, nursing and midwifery students who will probably spend a lot of time here. However, when the Green Room is closed during major holiday periods such as Christmas and Easter, Jummah prayer can be prayed here instead in room B36 which is down the corridor. Wudhu facilities are limited so try to come prepared and there is only space for approximately 20-30. Clarendon Wing can be accessed from level 7 of Worsley Building whilst it is open, otherwise, enter the hospital from the Jubilee Wing main entrance and follow the signs to Clarendon Wing. For any more information please contact brother Nasim Tahir who leads the prayers on 07971691056.
