Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah

Welcome to the University of Leeds. We have a very busy year planned for you guys so please join us in making Leeds the place to be. I regret not joining the ISOC in my first year, however I loved it so much in my second that I took up a post! I wish you a successful year in your studies and encourage you to partake in events, socials and try your best to make it to some of the talks/ lectures; they are very insightful. Also do not forget that ISOC is not restricted to Muslim students so if you feel that others whom you know may be interested then do invite them! The more the merrier :-)

Waslaams

Seconding the officers above, well done for joining one of the best and most alive learning grounds in the UK! And welcome to LUU ISoc :)

University is a time where you will probably find yourself growing and maturing the most, and really find your feet. Leeds Uni Union ISoc is here to help you on this journey, provide a warm, inviting atmosphere for you, and help keep you in touch with your spirituality. If you're anything like I was in my first year, you won't know much about what we do or how to get involved. If that's the case, worry not! Simply put, we are here to work for YOU, and provide you with the best stay here as possible. We would like to become familiar with you, so that we can increase in the bonds that we have in this natural sisterhood and brotherhood. So if I haven't met you already, please do drop me an email and say hello!

As your Education & Da'wah officer, I have the honour of introducing an exciting series of thought-engaging talks, stimulating study circles and spiritual courses for your personal growth over the course of the year. We look forward to inviting profound scholars from all over the UK, as well as charismatic international guest speakers, to get your thoughts going and address those contemporary issues that we students all face. In a nutshell, the topics are catered specially to you and your needs!

The sessions will be regular inshaAllah (God-willing), fun and often with yummy tea and cakes :o) You will get to meet like-minded people and hopefully make some of your most lasting friendships, so I strongly encourage you to come along and see what it’s all about. We shall also be bringing quality entertainment to the door of your campus, with some of the best nasheed artists, comedians & poets around inshaAllah! Stay tuned, because we have a year jammed with events and other social activities lined up for you.

Come and talk to me if there's anything at all that you would like help with or even if there's an issue that you need a scholarly ruling on. As your ISoc committee representative I am here to support you. My email is: shazana@leedsisoc.com

Best wishes for the year ahead,

Shazana

Education 2: Arif Ali

Salaam to All.

First of all, you may not know it but you have truly been blessed by being able to secure a place at such a prestigious University.

So Mubarak! Now that you have all the ingredients needed to a successful career, the ISOC is here to help you on that journey.

It is narrated that Imam Ahmed once said:

"People need knowledge more than they need food and drink, because they need food and drink two or three times a day, but they need knowledge all the time."

Thus it is my role to provide that platform where you can benefit from such knowledge through organising Weekly and Monthly talks, for you guys. Please watch this space as I have some BIG plans for the year ahead. From nasheed artists, to comedians to international speakers. I like to think of myself as a pretty laid back guy - the cool, calm and collected one. So I am open to suggestions for ideas and improvement. My business email is arifiscool@leedsisoc.com ;p

Without hardship, there is no treasure; he who has worked hard will be paid in full measure.

Student Affairs: Sakina Mayet

Being a student at Leeds isn’t all about study and socialising. As a member of your student union you have a huge range of excellent opportunities to get involved by representing your fellow students on issues which affect them. If there's something you care passionately about such as the quality of education or welfare provision, preventing racism, sexism, Islamo-phobia, becoming a voluntary or full-time rep means that you will have the time, resources and training to be able to do something about it.

There are a range of part-time roles to suit a number of different interests. School or course reps protect the quality of our education and can raise any concerns or issues about courses, whilst hall and community reps work on issues such as accommodation, safety and the environment. Alternatively, ISoc members might want to consider becoming part of the activities executive who ensure accessibility of clubs and societies and determine the outcome of complaints made by members.

There are also six full-time paid positions available as a Student Executive Officer and every member of the union is eligible to put themselves forward for this in the annual election. Each Officer is responsible for representing students locally, nationally and to the University in particular areas such as Equality & Diversity, Education and Welfare. All members are encouraged to run for these positions to ensure that the concerns of Muslim students are communicated and understood at every level of the student community. Not only will you be benefiting your community, but you will also be learning skills that will assist you personally in your working life and beyond.

Members of the Student Executive gain experience in many fields usually unmatched by any other graduate job and ex-members have become successful in a number of areas including national politics, campaigns, film and journalism.

If you have any ideas for a campaign that you want to run with the ISoc, you can also get in touch with me or any member of the committee who will be happy to help you put your plans into action.

Dua's

Welfare 1: Hajra Amin

Assalamu alaykum, it is my great honour and privilege to welcome you to The University of Leeds and to your Islamic Society! I sincerely pray your time here is successful, both academically and spiritually.

As the Welfare Officer, my role is to ensure all is fair and well! It’s my job to support you with any issues you may have such as securing sufficient accommodation and I hope to make you feel welcome through helping to organise our socials and Sisters’ Circles. Most importantly, I want us to help one another to remain focussed and strive to be better versions of ourselves, for the sake of Allah.

I look forward to meeting you all individually to discuss how we can work together for an active, diverse and cooperative Islamic Society. Alternatively, please feel free to contact me on lw10ha@leeds.ac.uk with any questions, suggestions or comments! The committee is here to help you wherever we can so please utilise us and forgive us for any shortcomings.

Wa’alaykum As-salaam
